The Story

Nestled gracefully at the foot of the Venetian castle on the captivating island of Astipalea is an age-old, resplendent white stone residence, surrounded by a vast garden. As the centuries unfolded, the Chora organically expanded around it, yet this particular dwelling has consistently basked in its exalted status, owing to both its strategic location and substantial size.

Standing proudly on its balconies, one is treated to a breathtaking panorama of the Aegean, with views extending all the way to the distant Turkish coasts. The spellbinding beauty invites a hushed reverence, prompting contemplation and offering a serene vision of peace. This dwelling transcends the mere definition of a house; it is a living testament to the passage of time and a repository of captivating stories.

In days of yore, those robust stone walls sheltered the Telegraph and Post Office during the Italian occupation. Alongside dedicated postal workers, the Italian gendarmerie used this vantage point to keep a vigilant watch over the Aegean, their gaze reaching as far as the Turkish shores. With the cessation of hostilities, the occupants graciously relinquished the historic edifice to the island community.

In the post-Italian era, this venerable house seamlessly transitioned into a vital hub, offering essential services to the local population. It retained its pivotal role within the community, becoming a focal point for shared experiences and collective memories.

Then, after three decades of dormant existence, the narrative of this house took an exciting turn in 1976 when a visionary Athenian named Simos embarked on an Aegean exploration. Drawn to the island of Astypalea, he stumbled upon this captivating house and, captivated by its panoramic views and vibrant energy, resolved to make it his own, embarking on an ambitious journey of restoration.

Under the discerning ownership of Mr. Simos, the house underwent meticulous renovations. Astipaliti masons, with their deft hands, performed architectural alchemy, breathing new life into the structure while carefully preserving its authentic island allure. The result was a harmonious blend of history, elegance, and contemporary comfort, ensuring that the legacy of this remarkable abode endures for generations to come.

In a stroke of brilliance, Simos conceived an addition that would breathe life into the lower part of the building left vacant until 1983: a bar, and not just any bar but the "Panorama Bar." This was Simos' personal project, an audacious and extravagant venture that injected a breath of fresh air into Astypalea. Alongside the clinking of glasses and the melodies of Rebetiko music, the "Panorama Bar" became a cultural epicenter, drawing Simos' friends, musicians, and singers to the island, enriching the community with their stories. At that time, the island boasted only a kafeneion and a few taverns, but the soul of the "Panorama Bar" broke through, offering solace and rejuvenation to a population wearied by misfortunes. It was a unique experience, a herald of cultural revival, so captivating that it was reluctantly silenced by a decree from the local authorities. The "Panorama Bar" flourished for two vibrant years before, in 1985, its premises fell silent, awaiting a new chapter.

In the years that followed, the space found intermittent use, hosting private parties and art exhibitions, but then came a prolonged void—a hiatus that lingered for too long. The echoes of the "Panorama Bar" were relegated to memories, awaiting the moment when this space would once again be animated by the stories of its past, rekindling the spirit that had made it an indelible part of Astypalea's history.

Today, this historic house stands as a harmonious blend of history and contemporary comfort, a testament to the island's enduring charm. Yet, its story doesn't end with its architectural marvels; it weaves seamlessly into the fabric of personal narratives. This dwelling has been the cherished vacation home for four decades. It has been witness to the joy of summer vacations, the exuberance of festivities and celebrations, the warmth of huge dinners on the terrace, the richness of wine-tasting sessions, the intimacy of late-night talks, and the awe of stargazing. It is a place where life has been lived, laughter has echoed, and love has flourished.

The intertwining of personal history and architectural heritage creates a unique tapestry that defines this remarkable abode, ensuring that its legacy endures not just in the annals of Astipalea's history but also in the cherished memories of those who have called it home.
